چکیده

We studied respiratory chemosensitivity in a patient with pulmonary arterio-venous (AV) fistulae before and after surgical removal of the lesions. The patient had had moderate hypoxaemia with hyperventilation before the operation. When first studied, 21 days following surgery, both hypoxic and hypercapnic ventilatory responses were found to be lower than they were preoperatively. During the next 1-2 months, hypoxic ventilatory response continued to fall significantly to a steady value, whereas hypercapnic response showed no further fall. There has been no previous report of such a phenomenon in humans after recovery from chronic hypoxaemia.

Predictors for nocturnal hypoxaemia (mean SaO2 < 90%) in normoxic and mildly hypoxic patients with COPD.

Detection of nocturnal hypoxaemia, defined as a mean arterial oxygen saturation below 90%, in normoxic or mildly hypoxic chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients seems clinically relevant, since this feature may precede pulmonary hypertension. Nocturnal studies are expensive and time-consuming procedures. The current study investigates to what extent it is possible to predict noctu...

Response to hypoxia of pulmonary arteries in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: an in vitro study.

Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) show impaired hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction that might contribute to abnormal gas exchange and could be related to endothelial dysfunction in pulmonary arteries. The aim of the study was to investigate the response of PA to hypoxic stimulus in vitro in COPD, and the role of endothelium-derived nitric oxide (NO) in this response. Th...

Sustained Hypoxic Pulmonary Vasoconstriction in the Isolated Perfused Rat Lung: Effect of α1-adrenergic Receptor Agonist

Background: Alveolar hypoxia induces monophasic pulmonary vasoconstriction in vivo, biphasic vasoconstriction in the isolated pulmonary artery, and controversial responses in the isolated perfused lung. Pulmonary vascular responses to sustained alveolar hypoxia have not been addressed in the isolated perfused rat lung. In this study, we investigated the effect of sustained hypoxic ventilation o...

CONGENITAL BRONCHO-ESOPHAGEAL FISTULA: A CASE REPORT

Congenital broncho-esophageal fistula (BEF) is a rare anomaly usually detected in adulthood. In one of the latest reviews of this anomaly, no more than 150 cases were found in the world literature. We report our experience with a 49 year old male patient referring with a classic presentation of chronic cough and choking episodes upon liquid intake. Broncho-esophageal fistula was confirmed b...

Acquired attenuation of chemoreceptor function in chronically hypoxic man at high altitude.

To determine whether chronic exposure to hypoxia during adulthood produces alterations in the control of ventilation, measurements of the resting ventilatory response to hypoxia and hypercapnia, as well as ventilatory response to hypoxia during exercise, were carried out in a group of 10 long-term (3-39 yr) non-native residents of Leadville, Colo. (elevation 3100 m). A group of 8 subjects nativ...
